Islam could soon be the dominant force in a Europe which, in the name of political correctness, has abdicated the battle for cultural and religious control, Prof. Bernard Lewis, the world-renowned Middle Eastern and Islamic scholar, said on Sunday.Has anything so enormous, so precious, and so irreplaceable ever been more wantonly forsaken and betrayed by its own privileged beneficiaries than has the Christian underpinnings of Western civilization in our time? It takes ones breath away. If only we would realize what we have done or allowed to be done to the cultures in which our children and grandchildren will be obliged to live. No salvaging effort will bear fruit that does not start with contrition.
The Muslims "seem to be about to take over Europe," Lewis said at a special briefing with the editorial staff of The Jerusalem Post. Asked what this meant for the continent's Jews, he responded, "The outlook for the Jewish communities of Europe is dim." Soon, he warned, the only pertinent question regarding Europe's future would be, "Will it be an Islamized Europe or Europeanized Islam?" The growing sway of Islam in Europe was of particular concern given the rising support within the Islamic world for extremist and terrorist movements, said Lewis.

The Future of Europe
In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, Bernard Lewis made it clear:

I think you mean "salvaging."
I've been reading a book on modern Africa, The Shadow of the Sun, by the great Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski. What became unavoidably clear to me is the concentric ripples of creativity, hope, and generosity that have pervaded Christian societies with all their faults, and the relative deficiency of those things in power-obsessed Islam and fear-obsessed animism.
And to think that so many Westerners pout because their societies are imperfect, and are prepared to let them slip away!
The homeland of the Christian faith and offspring of the Catholic Church, Europe, was never fully a thoroughgoing practitioner of the Way. No more than Israel fully and faithfully worshiped Yahweh, disposed as it was to go to Temple on the Sabbath and Ba’al shrines for “prayer meetings” other days of the week.
The “blond beast” — worship of Dionysus — has ever been the ongoing temptation of Europe even at the zenith of Christendom. And the biblical God has ever used unlikely tools to chastise his children; even now one wielding a crescent and scimitar.
